Emergency Procedures

Emergencies can occur at any time, often without warning. The following information can help you manage many emergency situations appropriately.

Your judgment often determines whether an incident is an emergency. If in doubt, always err on the side of safety. It is important to understand how to receive information and warnings about emergencies affecting campus.

Listed below are several different ways campus affiliates can stay informed about emergencies that may impact the Boulder campus and other important safety information.

If you are experiencing an emergency or in immediate danger, please call 911.

Shelter in Place
  • Choose appropriate shelter location with the best protection.
  • Only take personal items if space allows.
  • Remain sheltered until instructed that it is safe to leave.
  • Monitor alerts.colorado.edu for latest information.
Severe Weather
  • Severe weather can occur at any time.
  • Keep calm and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Seek substantial shelter, NOT your vehicle.
  • After hazard has passed, move outside and away from buildings.
Active Harmer
  • RUN: if you have a clear exit and can do so safely.
  • HIDE: if escape isn’t possible. Silence phones, close and lock doors, and turn off lights.
  • FIGHT: as a last resort. Commit to your actions and use improvised weapons.
Flash Flood
  • Get to high ground immediately.
  • Don’t drive or walk through flooded areas.
  • Don’t leave campus until flash flood alerts have been cleared.
Fire
  • Leave building immediately when signaled by fire alarm.
  • Activate nearest fire alarm.
  • Close doors as you evacuate the area.
  • Stay low, smoke and heat rise.
  • If safe, attempt to extinguish fire.
Evacuation
  • Follow your emergency alerts and get yourself to safety.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Carry only necessary belongings (keys, wallet, phone, etc.).
  • Do not re-enter spaces.
Health & Safety Hazard
  • Move away from hazard.
  • Call 911 and EH&S (303-492-6025) to report. Be specific with details.
  • Alert others to stay away from the area.
  • If situation is life-threatening, pull fire alarm to evacuate the building.
  • Close doors and windows to contain the material.
Medical Emergency
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment if needed.
  • Check for scene safety before approaching the victim.
  • Check victim response by shouting and tapping.
  • Begin CPR if needed and send someone for an AED.
  • Do 30 chest compressions, 2 inches in, at 100 beats per minute.
  • Continue CPR until help arrives.
