Defensive Driver Training
Individuals who drive a university vehicle are required to take a Defensive Driving course. Affiliates of the university can access free online training for the Defensive Driving Course (not NSC-certified) through MyCUInfo/Skillsoft by clicking the button below:Ìý
National Safety Council DDC-4 Training
Transportation Services holds occasional in-person National Safety Council (NSC) Defensive Driving Courses (DDC-4) at the Transportation Center on East Campus. Cost is $125 per individual. Courses are open to both CU affiliates and members of the public. To schedule a class for your group, please call Transportation Services at 303-492-6010.
CDL Training
Transportation Services can train and administer the driving exam for Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL) for university employees who require this license for their employment. Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) regulations apply;Ìý Call 303-492-6010 with any questions. Please note: A minimum of two weeks lead-time is required for scheduling the CDL training

15-Passenger/Cargo Van Training
Transportation Services has mandated a one hour required training course which you can take online via Percipio and a forty-five minute behind-the-wheel evaluation. Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) regulations may apply. Call 303-492-6010 or email transposafety@colorado.edu to schedule training or answers to your questions. The course fee is $73. Please note: A minimum of two weeks lead-time is required for scheduling the behind-the-wheel evaluation.
NOTE: A regular passenger vehicle typically has a wheelbase of about 5 to 6 feet and a width of approximately 5 feet, while a 15-passenger or cargo van has a wheelbase of about 13 to 13.5 feet and can be up to 8 feet wide. Tail swing (rear overhang), which is the distance from the rear axle to the rear bumper, is generally about 2 feet on a passenger vehicle and about 4 feet on a van. Vans are also taller and have a higher center of gravity, increasing the risk of rollover, especially when carrying cargo on the roof.
Driver training and road certification are designed to help operators understand and manage these vehicle characteristics, including turning radius, tail swing, vehicle height, and appropriate speed selection. Regardless of whether your vehicle seats 15 passengers or is a cargo van, all van drivers are required to successfully complete the required online training and road certification before operating a university vehicle.
