Lateral OfficersÌý
This position is designed for currently certified or previously certified officers who possess prior patrol or investigative experience and are committed to professional policing, community engagement, and public safety.
Police Cadet/Recruit
The police cadet/recruit position is for those that have not completed a prior police academy and do not have their POST peace officer license.Ìý Once hired, the recruit will attend a police academy, where they will obtain their POST certificate upon successful completion.Ìý The academy will offer formal classroom instruction, firearms training, physical fitness and defensive tactics training, emergency vehicle operations, scenario based training, and scenario-based exercises. Cadets learn the foundations of policing, public safety, criminal law, and community engagement while developing the professionalism, discipline, and decision-making skills required for modern law enforcement.ÌýÌý
Key Responsibilities
- Attend and successfully complete all academy classes and training exercises
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and accountability at all times
- Follow academy rules, departmental policies, and chain-of-command proceduresÌý
- Successfully complete course work, written exams, practical evaluations, scenario-based training, state licensing exam.
Both the cadet/recruit and lateral office positions will go through the same hiring process. This includes:

The Colorado Peace Officer Standards & Training board shall deny certification to any person who has been convicted of any felony or select misdemeanors. You can find the entire listÌý.Ìý
Prior drug use shall be included in this process, using the Federal Drug Classification Schedules for the following standards:
- Any conviction for the sale, manufacture or distribution of a controlled substance, or actions that support the sale, manufacture or distribution of a controlled substance will disqualify all applicants.
- Applicants must not have used any drug listed in Schedule I, excluding marijuana, or Schedule Il, in the last ten years.
- Applicants must not have used any drug listed in Schedule III, Schedule IV or Schedule V, in the last five years.
- Applicants must not have abused prescription medication in the last three years.
A candidate's eligibility for hire will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, using a totality-of-the-circumstances framework, however the following considerations will be examined:
- Age at the time the behavior occurred
- Passage of time
- Patterns of past behavior
- Severity of behavior
- Likelihood of reoccurrence
- Relevance of past behavior to public safety employment
- Other relevant considerations
