For Interested Students

Thanks for your interest in getting involved in the Welker Lab! The processes for joining the lab as an PhD, MS, or undergraduate student are all quite different, so please review the information that applies to you before reaching out.

Prospective PhD Students

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the work that we do in the lab, I advise students and am able to accept PhD students across multiple programs, including Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, and Integrative Physiology.  While I am always looking for talented PhD stdents, available funding at the time of admissions affects how many students I can accept to the lab in a given year. In addition, each PhD program has distinct requirements with respect to admissions, graduation requirements, etc. Because of these constraints, the best time to reach out if you're interested in joining the lab is in the fall prior to application deadlines.

Prospective (or current) MS Students

Many programs at CU offer a thesis-based MS program, in addition to a course-based MS program. If you're interested in pursuing a Masters thesis under my supervision, please first take my course in the fall (MCEN 5157: Modeling of Human Movement), which will cover many of the skills required to do research in the lab and allow us to get to know each other prior to the thesis commitment. Taking this course is also useful if you're interested in getting involved in the lab as an MS non-thesis student, which is dependent on help that current graduate students may need with their projects. Due to the number of interested students, non-thesis MS positions in the lab typically start as unpaid positions and may progress to paid positions with continued involvement. If you're interested in getting involved in the lab by helping out a current graduate student with their research project, please fill out this , and we will reach out if there is availability.

Undergraduate Students

There are multiple programs offered by 91´«Ã½ to facilitate undergraduate research, including SPUR, DLA, and UROP. If you're interested in the lab, please keep an eye out on listings for projects in these programs. These programs offer hourly stipends, and we receive many more applicants than we can admit. In addition, if current graduate students in the lab need additional help with their projects, there may also be opportunities to get involved outside these programs. Due to the number of interested students, undergraduate positions outside these programs typically start as unpaid positions and may progress to paid positions with continued involvement. If you're interested in getting involved in the lab by helping out a current graduate student with their research project, please fill out this , and we will reach out if there is availability.Â
