Comprehensive and Interdisciplinary

International Affairs majors and minors begin their studies with a survey of the most compelling global issues of the day and create detailed analyses of international relations and economics. Our major and minor requirements include courses from the Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History and Political Science departments, as well as other departments across the college and campus.Ìý

IAFS Majors and Minors complete courses across four Functional Areas, or core areas of study:

  • Development & Culture
  • International Economics, Business, & Political Economy
  • Political Geography, International Security, & Foreign Policy
  • Institutions, Rights, & Norms

Functional Areas are broad themes that organize the academic program, enabling students to explore different dimensions of global issues through focused coursework.

IAFS Majors choose a Geographic Concentration and complete a regionally aligned language proficiency requirement:

  • Africa & Middle East
  • Asia
  • Europe & Eurasia
  • Latin America

The Geographic Concentration defines the area of the world students study, while the language requirement deepens engagement with that region - building regional expertise and global readiness.

The Geographic Concentration and language requirements are only applicable to IAFS Majors (not IAFS Minors). Please review the Major or Minor requirements for specific requirements.
