Before Making a Transfer of Credit Request

The Graduate School encourages students to work directly with their Graduate Program Assistant and/or faculty advisor before making a request for transfer credit (ToC).ÌýÌý

  • Review university-wide TOC requirements (listed in the information section below.
  • Determine what information or documents are needed for program and Graduate School review.Ìý
  • Work with the program to determine whether the course content of requested credit(s) aligns with the student’s focus and the learning outcomes of the program, and meets any program-specific requirements.ÌýÌý
  • For courses taken at an international institution, utilize any existing resources to help determine credit conversion.
  • If courses were taken while the student was in an undergraduate program (but were not used toward an awarded degree), consult with the undergraduate dean’s office at the undergraduate institution in advance and obtain the necessary verification. (If courses were taken at CU, the office will provide verification as part of the process; ensure in advance that their records allow them to do so).Ìý
  • If courses were taken while the student was in a graduate program of the same level (but were not used toward an awarded degree of the same level), consult with the dean’s office at the graduate institution in advance and obtain the necessary verification.

Transfer of Credit Information and Standards

Transfer credit is defined as any credit earned at another accredited institution, credits earned on another campus of the CU system, or credits earned as a non-degree student within the CU system. The following limits apply:Ìý

Master’s student: 9 semester hours, MFA student: 18 semester hours, Doctoral student: 21 semester hours, Students who took courses as a non-degree student toward a 91´«Ã½ graduate certificate: 24 semester hours

Transfer credits must meet the following standards to be considered:

Work already applied toward a graduate degree received from 91´«Ã½ or another institution cannot be accepted for transfer toward another graduate degree of the same level at 91´«Ã½. In addition, work completed for a doctoral degree may not be applied toward a subsequent master’s degree. Courses applied toward an undergraduate degree may not be transferred to the 91´«Ã½ Graduate School.

All courses accepted for transfer must be graduate level courses. The course grade must be B or higher. Transfer course work which is to be applied to a graduate degree at 91´«Ã½ and was completed more than 5 years prior to being accepted to the program shall be evaluated by the major department as to current relevance and applicability to the degree requirements

Transfer of Credit Process

A request has been made when a student has been admitted to a degree seeking program and has submitted a Transfer of Credit request form with all required official documentation. Upon submission of the TOC form and all required documentation, the student’s graduate program shall review the request. The graduate program will determine which specific requirements are met by the transferred courses and the Degree Audit area of applicability. The request will then undergo a more technical Graduate School review. International admissions or an undergraduate dean’s office will review if applicable. If the Graduate School has questions or concerns, they will work closely with the Graduate Program Assistant and/or student to resolve, informing the student of the issue.ÌýÌý

The process of program and Graduate School review shall be complete within 30 days. Final approval of a TOC request will be sent to the program and student. After approval of a student’s request, additional time may be needed for processing and addition of the credits to the student’s academic record.

  • The name and colorado.edu e-mail address of the director of graduate studies for their program. (In some cases this will be the associate chair or associate dean. If you do not have this information, please ask your graduate program assistant.)
