CEAE Temporary FacultyÌý
Each year the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering hires professionals to teach a variety of courses to engineers and technical professionals in the areas of civil, environmental and architectural engineering. These teaching roles are filled on an as-needed basis each semester.Ìý
What We Require:Ìý
- Master’s degree in civil, environmental or architectural engineering or a related discipline; or equivalent experience in engineering or a discipline related to the courseÌý
Preferred Qualifications:Ìý
- Lecturers are hired to teach a particular course or courses for which they are qualified. Lecturers must have at least a graduate degree or equivalent experience and significant experience in their profession or field of expertise.ÌýÌý
Compensation ranges from $1,000 - $13,500 per course. As of Jan. 1, 2026, the department's standard rate for teaching a 3-credit course is $11,248.64 per semester, prorated based on number of credit hours, use of lab-based instruction, and/or co-teaching.Ìý
In an exceptional circumstance the standard rate may be increased, e.g. lecturer from industry with specialized expertise, a person covering class on short notice or a person handling a class that requires significant investment of time beyond normal course prep (such as having to find industry speakers for a freshman seminar class).Ìý In other exceptional circumstances, the standard rate may be decreased, e.g. low course enrollment or reduced workload requirements.ÌýÌý

Temporary titles for those who teach on a course-by-course basis are inclusive of Lecturer, (less than 50% time appointment) and Instructional Associate (equal to or over 50% time appointment or those that have an active three-year clock).Ìý
If hired as an Instructional Associate, this will start a three-year clock and after that time they will be ineligible to be hired that way again. The clock will be based on the first start date as an Instructional Associate and will not pause with any break in appointment or reduction in FTE.Ìý
These appointments are temporary in nature and candidates are hired on a semester-by-semester basis. Temporary faculty appointments are eligible for accrued sick time. Sick time is earned on a prorated basis. This position is eligible for employee sick leave earned monthly on a prorated basis. CEAE Student Positions
Student Assistants
Hourly undergraduate and graduate student assistant opportunities are available within various areas in the department with administrative and research work such as:
- Frontline Operation
- Answering phone calls and e-mails from students, staff, faculty and other customers
- Working on projects such as data collection, enrollment tallies, admissions numbers tracking, etc.
- Mailing services
- Data entry, filing, updating records, etc.
- Supporting faculty and staff with business needs (ordering materials, office and class supplies; printing; calling vendors for maintenance of office equipment, etc.)
- Assisting the Finance department
- Assisting the Graduate advisors
- Assisting faculty with research projects
- Helping in the departmental laboratories
Pay range: $16.80+Ìý
- Starting pay rate depends on student’s skills, qualifications and experience in the respective area.
- Pay rate may increase after the first semester and is dependent upon the student’s performance and length of employment.
Student hourly positions are not permanent employees and hired on a semester-by-semester basis. This position is eligible for employee sick leave earned monthly on a prorated basis. CEAE does not offer internships.Ìý

Student Graders
Assist faculty members in their course with responsibilities such as:
- GradingÌýhomework, problem sets, tests, and/or term papers
- Responding to student questions and inquiries about course content and materials
- Assisting the instructor with course content management and organization on Canvas
- Researching data and materials for the course
Hourly Rate of Pay: $18 (undergraduate Graders); $19 (graduate Graders (Readers))
Course Assistants (CAs)
Assist faculty members in their course with all the responsibilities of Student Graders in addition to the following:
- Assist with technical mentoring
- Hold office hours
- Occasionally lead parts of class
Hourly Rate of Pay: $19 (undergraduate CAs); $20 (graduate CAs)

Graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs)
Assist faculty members in their course with all the responsibilities of Student Graders and CAs in addition to the following:
- Assist with teaching the course to which they are assigned
Rate of Pay:Ìý
$3,352.96/month for MS & Pre Comprehensive Exam PhD students; $3,605.09/month for Post Comprehensive Exam PhD students
Rates will be increasing for Fall 2026. Rate of pay will be $3,460.26/month for MSÌý& Pre Comprehensive Exam PhD students; $3,720.46/month for Post Comprehensive Exam PhD students.

Graduate Research Assistants (RAs)
Assist faculty members engaged in research with the following:
- Attend weekly research and project meetings
- Put full effort into pursuing project milestones as specified by the sponsor
- Other job duties as assigned by your faculty supervisor

$3,352.96/month for MS & Pre Comprehensive Exam PhD students; $3,605.09/month for Post Comprehensive Exam Ph.D. students

Temporary Work (Part-/full-time)
The Department Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) occassionally seeks temporary professionals to support in research or program administration. These roles are filled on an as-needed basis up to 9 to 12 months.
- Compensation ranges from $18 - $60 per hour, depending on the work assignment, qualifications, technical function, and experience.
Examples of temporary work available in CEAE include:
- Grant Writing/Management
- Research Lab Assistant
- Finance Administration
- Course Scheduling / Student Support
- Communications or website maintenance
