Fall Welcome is almost here, offering a chance to explore campus life and meet other students. Through fun events and activities, you’ll get to connect with people as the semester begins.

The connections you make during the first few weeks of school can lead to new friendships. Here are some easy tips to help you get started.

Make the first move

When it comes to making friends, one strategy to try this semester is to commit to making the first move. Try to be the first one to introduce yourself when you meet someone new over the next few weeks. Whether you’re meeting people in your residence hall or at Fall Welcome events, being the one to break the ice can help pave the way for fun conversations and new friendships.

Find Buffs with similar interests or hobbies

Finding your community can help you feel more comfortable at a large university like 91��ý. Between student organizations, classes, or programs and events that are specific to different groups and interests, there are many ways to connect with Buffs around things you have in common.

College is a great time to discover new passions and explore your identity. Here are a few ways to get started:

Make time to socialize: While focusing on academics is important, you should also take breaks to attend events and spend time with others.

Keep trying: It can take time to find friends that you connect with more deeply. It’s OK if you have friends that you only see in class or when you visit the Rec Center at first. These interactions can still be a highlight in your day and might become closer friendships over time.

Learn outside the classroom

Some of the most meaningful college experiences happen beyond lectures and labs. Joining a student organization, volunteering, working on campus or taking on a leadership role gives you hands-on experience you can’t always get in class.

Along the way, you’ll build skills employers value, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership. You’ll also gain stories and experiences that can strengthen your resume, internship applications and future job interviews.

Find your people

Getting involved is one of the easiest ways to meet other Buffs who share your interests. Whether you’re passionate about the arts, sustainability, sports, service, business or social justice, you’ll find opportunities to connect with people who enjoy the same things you do.

Volunteer: Through Service Learning & Impact in Community Engagement (SLICE), you can give back to the community while gaining valuable experience and meeting other students.

Work on campus: An on-campus job lets you earn money, build professional skills and connect with fellow Buffs—all while working around your class schedule.

Support sustainability: Connect with the Environmental Center to work on sustainability projects, advocate for environmental issues and make a positive impact on campus.

You don’t have to do everything at once. Start with one or two activities that genuinely interest you, then adjust as you settle into your routine.

Here are a few ways to stay balanced:

Use a planner or calendar to keep track of classes, meetings and deadlines.

Choose quality over quantity. Focus on a few activities that fit your goals instead of overcommitting.

Ask for help if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Professors, advisors and student organization leaders can help you navigate busy times.

Make time for yourself. Getting enough sleep, eating well and taking breaks will help you stay energized throughout the semester.

Looking for a way to stay active, meet people and make the most of your college experience? Sport Clubs through Campus Recreation & Well-Being offer the chance to compete against other colleges and universities, build friendships and develop leadership skills—all while representing 91��ý.

With 30 Sport Clubs to choose from, there's something for a variety of interests and experience levels.

Compete

Keep playing the sport you love or challenge yourself with something new. Sport Clubs compete against colleges and universities throughout the region and beyond, giving you the opportunity to test your skills, travel and represent the Buffs.

Connect

Sport Clubs are communities. You'll meet students who share your interests, make lasting friendships and become part of a team that supports each other on and off the field, court, water or trail.

Lead

Every Sport Club is student-led, giving members the opportunity to build real-world leadership experience. Students help organize travel, manage finances, plan fundraisers, hire coaches and serve as club officers. It's a great way to develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills that will benefit you in college and beyond.

Looking for a job or internship that fits your class schedule? An on-campus job can help you earn money, build your resume and meet other Buffs—all while keeping your academics first.

Whether you’re looking for your first job, an internship or hoping to gain experience related to your major, here are three reasons to consider student employment at 91��ý.

1. Work around your classes

One of the biggest benefits of an on-campus job is flexibility. Most campus departments understand that you’re a student first, so supervisors typically schedule shifts around your classes and other commitments. Many also offer extra flexibility during busy times like midterms and finals.

Most student employees work about 10–15 hours each week, with a maximum of 25 hours. That means you can earn money while still making your coursework your top priority.

2. Build your community

An on-campus job is a great way to meet people outside of your classes. Whether you work at Campus Recreation & Well-Being, the Environmental Center, the University Memorial Center (UMC), Campus Dining & Hospitality or another department, you’ll get to know fellow Buffs who share your interests and become part of your campus community.

You’ll also work alongside faculty and staff who can become mentors, offer career advice and support your goals long after graduation. Many student supervisors serve as references, write recommendation letters or help students connect with internships, research opportunities and future jobs.

One of the quickest ways to make a big campus feel smaller is by finding your community, and the Be Involved Fair is a great place to start.

Whether you're looking to make friends, join a recognized student organization (RSO) or recognized social Greek organization (RSGO), build your resume, volunteer or simply find more things to do at 91��ý, you'll discover hundreds of opportunities all in one place.

Attend 91��ý’s annual Be Involved Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 2–6 p.m. on Farrand Field, hosted by the Center for Student Involvement (CSI). Meet representatives from student organizations, ask questions and explore ways to get involved this year.

Fall Welcome and move-in are almost here! This is your chance to make a difference, join an annual campus tradition and help new students and families feel at home.

Move-in takes place Aug. 14-18, and Fall Welcome runs Aug. 16–29—bringing faculty, staff and students together to kick off the school year in an exciting way. Design the official Homecoming T-shirt

Bring your creativity to life and help define the look of Homecoming 2026. CU Student Government is hosting a t-shirt design contest, and your artwork could be featured at one of the biggest events of the year. Show off your Buff pride and leave your mark on this milestone celebration. Submit by June 5.

Join the Student Homecoming Coalition

Be part of the team behind the scenes. The Student Homecoming Coalition plans and brings Homecoming to life—from events to traditions that build connection and school spirit. You’ll gain leadership experience, collaborate with other students and help shape a major campus tradition. Apply by July 1.

Nominate a Homecoming Court candidate

Celebrate student leaders who make a difference. Nominate yourself or someone you admire for the 2026 Homecoming Court. It’s a chance to recognize students who embody Buff pride, leadership and community impact.

Eligibility: Seniors (90+ credit hours) in good academic and conduct standing

Both the Main Student Recreation Center and the Williams Village Recreation Center are open to full fee-paying students and feature a range of exercise equipment including weights, cardio machines and functional fitness areas. Learn more about what The Rec has to offer.

Join fitness classes and training programs

Fitness and Wellness programs at The Rec offer various ways to stay motivated, find workout buddies and reach your fitness goals. Explore these options as you begin your first semester:

Group fitness classes: Access over 65 group fitness classes each week with a Be Fit Pass. From Pilates and cycling to strength training and F45, there’s something for everyone.

Instructional programs: Take advantage of small group instructional classes for activities like swimming, boxing, CrossFit, dance, martial arts and ice skating.

Personal training: Reach your fitness goals with certified personal trainers, either with one-on-one or pair sessions

Discover new activities and find community

Your time at 91��ý is the perfect opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. The Rec creates spaces to explore, connect and grow:

Inclusive Rec events: Open to all Buffs, these free events allow you to make new connections while trying different things like hiking, ice skating, adaptive training sessions and more.

Free Friday Power Hour: If you purchase a Be Fit Pass but your friend doesn’t, invite them to Free Friday Power Hour! Curious about group fitness classes but not ready to commit to a Be Fit Pass? Buffs can join a free class every Friday during the semester.

Work at The Rec: Looking for a campus job? The Rec Center offers opportunities for students to gain valuable leadership skills, work experience and friendships.

Get involved through team sports

Team sports are a fun and engaging way to stay active while forming friendships and building a sense of community. Here are two ways to get involved:

Intramural (IM) Sports

Join one of 91��ý’s Intramural Sports leagues, open to all skill levels. Buy a Sports Pass for unlimited access to IM Sports for $25 per semester or $45 per year. Whether you’re playing on a team or joining as a free agent, it’s all about having fun and meeting new friends.

Sport Clubs

Take your athletic interests to the next level by competing against other colleges and universities through Sport Clubs. 91��ý offers 30 men’s, women’s and co-ed teams. Informational meetings take place in late August and early September, and some teams may hold tryouts.

Explore Colorado with Outdoor Pursuits

Living in Boulder means you have access to stunning outdoor spaces, and Outdoor Pursuits at 91��ý can help you make the most of it. Whether you’re new to outdoor activities or an experienced adventurer, there’s something for everyone:

Trips and courses: Outdoor Pursuits offers trips and courses for activities like hiking, backpacking and climbing. These experiences are a fantastic way to connect with nature and fellow adventurers.

Wilderness workshops: Join fellow Buffs and learn essential skills like backcountry cooking, animal tracking, plant identification and survival techniques.

Equipment rentals: Planning your own adventure? Stop by the Outdoor Equipment Rental Center to rent camping, climbing, water sports and winter equipment. Rentals are available to all Buff OneCard holders.
