Changes to Late Class Withdrawal Petition Coming Fall 2026

Late Class Withdrawal Petition Process Changing

The Office of Undergraduate Education, Office of the Registrar and our academic colleges, schools and programs are excited to announce an updated process for late class withdrawals coming Fall 2026.Ìý Ìý Ìý ÌýÌýÌý Ìý

Since 2023, a working group of academic advising representatives and administrative staff have been meeting to streamline the student petition process for class withdrawals.Ìý

What’s Changing?Ìý

Starting Fall 2026, this process will impact all undergraduate and graduate students. After the Buff Portal deadline to drop with a W notation, students will submit late class withdrawal petitions through a centralized registrar form. A centralized university committee will review late class withdrawal petitions.

How Does It Benefit You?

  • One consistent policy and process for all students, irrespective of college, school or program or undergraduate/graduate student status, will streamline both the student and staff experience.
  • Updated and consistent terminology should reduce confusion for students, faculty and staff, and align with peer institutional practices.Ìý
  • Instructors will be invited to provide feedback on all late class withdrawal requests. Providing feedback is optional.Ìý
  • Students who petition for late class withdrawals will receive referrals to campus resources as part of the workflow, based on extenuating circumstances.
