Immigration attitudes and positive messaging: Evidence from the United States

Abstract:

This paper considers a messaging strategy to shift immigration preferences, arguing that if citizen attitudes in this issue-area build from several dimensions, then a positive message related to each dimension should move attitudes in a more favorable direction. It tests the first part using original survey data with directly comparable questions about whether immigration hurts/helps American culture/the economy/national security, providing evidence that all three dimensions currently support the preferences of voting-age citizens. It tests the second part by randomly presenting another sample with different messages about how labor immigration strengthens national security, creates new jobs, or enhances culture, finding that all three reduce anti-immigration attitudes with significant effects even within groups that are more opposed to immigration (namely, white Americans, those with less education, and partisan Republicans).

Globalization and social identities at the individual level: Populism from shifting at the top?

Abstract:

This paper reconsiders the proposition that globalization leads to more transnational and less national identities. Providing an argument specifying how these various international processes could shift identities at the individual level, it hypothesizes that globalization should be associated with more transnational/less national identities for people toward the top of society based on their experience with and information about globalization, but not for those at the bottom. Based on the identity shift happening at the top but not at the bottom, globalization should also be associated with a larger identity difference between the elite and the mass public. Using data from the sixth wave of the World Values Survey conducted across fifty-six countries from 2010 to 2014 and the seventh wave across forty-four countries from 2017 to 2020, it presents results consistent with these hypotheses.

Our department absolutely benefits from our graduate students and their interactions with our undergraduates. They influence them, they help focus them on their education goals, and they bring enthusiasm while becoming important role models.

Though teaching while one is also a graduate student is an intense balancing act, those that succeed positively advance their professional development while supporting the achievement and wellbeing of their students.
