When I was in elementary school I made a big move from Colorado to France with my mother. During the four years I lived there, I attended 3 separate fully French-speaking schools, which meant I had to learn the language from the ground up through hands-on learning and playing with other kids. I lived very close to the border of Spain and had friends living on both sides, so I often got to experience the cultures of both regions when I traveled between them. In addition to this, my Mother now lives in a small town in southern Madagascar. When I had the chance to visit, I really got to see many issues in person that I had only ever heard of on tv, and I got to travel around the local region visiting some more traditional villages outside of town. My mom, noticing that education is one such issue there, has now founded a small school and in the future I may travel there to help teach tech courses to locals, hopefully setting them up with the knowledge to pursue tech related opportunities. I have now long since returned to Colorado but I think my time in France, and Madagascar has exposed me to the cultures and challenges of people outside of my little local sphere, putting me in a good place to join the Global Engineering RAP.
I believe global experiences and diverse perspectives can help improve the field of engineering because, at least from my perspective, many people live in somewhat of a bubble, hearing about issues experienced in other parts of the world but rarely being affected themselves. And, from what I've seen, some of the most impactful technologies are often those developed by people who have personally experienced the issues they hope to solve. One field related to my area of interest, computer science, that is already rapidly expanding and will likely continue to do so is 3d printing, which I think has great potential to help address many challenges around the world.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU because I see it as a great opportunity to build new connections as I transition away from high school and from my friends who have chosen to attend other schools. I believe the program will provide an engaging and involved community, allowing me to get valuable chances to explore interesting and global issues in engineering, while adjusting to my new school environment. I really enjoy collaborating and sharing my ideas with others on group projects, and I hope to use my own experiences and knowledge to work with others and contribute to the residential community.
