Artist Statement
I combine self-portraiture with photography, using props and sculpture to construct surrealistic compositions.
Metaphors of isolation, yearning, rebirth, renewal, the unconscious, and conformity are embedded throughout my work. Images of hands appear, conveying messages of connections, humanity, and creation. My use of hands and faces adds realism into the fictitious places in my photography.Ěý
The series ˛Ń´Ç´Ç˛Ô»ĺłÜ˛őłŮĚýuses metaphors of human involvement within nature and the harmful tendencies of perceived control over nature, along with humanity’s desires of astronomical exploration. Aspects of isolation in space also appear within the series. The haunting presence of the moon lures people into curiosity, inspiring myths throughout history. I draw on that curiosity, using the moon as a vessel for storytelling in my art.
From “Ziggy Stardust” and “Space Oddity” to “Life on Mars” and “Moonage Daydream,” David Bowie’s themes of space influence my Moondust series. The series’ title is inspired by a line in Bowie’s song “Hallo Spaceboy.” Inspired by the alter egos of Kent Monkman and David Bowie that appear throughout their works, I also create narrative self-portrait figures in my photographs.
